The Cause: SCCF Fundraiser Supporting Coastal Conservation
Last Updated: January 29, 2026
THE CAUSE: A Signature Event Supporting SCCF and Southwest Florida's Conservation Future
THE CAUSE has become one of Sanibel Island’s most meaningful annual fundraising events — bringing together residents, seasonal visitors, conservation advocates, and local businesses to support the mission of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF). What began as a grassroots Sea School fundraiser on the Sanibel Causeway has evolved into a premier island conservation celebration now hosted at the historic Bailey Homestead Preserve.
The event reflects the heart of Sanibel itself: community involvement, environmental education, and long-term stewardship of Southwest Florida’s fragile coastal ecosystems.
SCCF: A Foundation Built on Preservation
Founded in 1967, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation was created by local residents who recognized early on that Sanibel’s wetlands, freshwater systems, and wildlife habitat needed protection. Their grassroots effort laid the groundwork for what would become one of Florida’s most respected and relied upon conservation organizations for sound science.
Today, SCCF leads initiatives focused on:
Wildlife research and protection
Sea turtle and shorebird monitoring
Native habitat restoration
Water quality science and estuary health
Environmental education programs
Climate resilience and coastal ecosystem research
This legacy of science-based conservation has helped shape Sanibel’s national reputation as a model for environmentally responsible island living.
The Origins of The Cause: Sea School on the Sanibel Causeway
The Cause began as a Sea School fundraising event, created to support unique hands-on environmental education programs that introduce students and families to marine ecosystems, coastal habitats, and conservation principles.
In its earliest years, the event was hosted on the Sanibel Causeway, where community members gathered outdoors to enjoy island views, live entertainment, and local food while raising funds for youth education programs. What started as a small community gathering quickly gained momentum as participation and awareness grew.
After lengthy discussions between SCCF CEO Ryan Orgera and the Board of Trustees and the Sanibel Sea School Board of Trustees, the Sanibel Sea School became a part of the SCCF family in 2020. This expanded SCCF's educational reach to younger generations and allowed Sea School students to explore land conservation efforts that affect our oceans.
Growth Into a Signature SCCF Event
As The Cause expanded, it evolved into an SCCF signature fundraiser, supporting a wider range of conservation initiatives beyond the Sanibel Sea School.
The event eventually found its permanent home at the Bailey Homestead Preserve — SCCF’s historic property and environmental campus with it's native plant nursery and demonstration gardens. Surrounded by native vegetation, preserved wetlands, and historic facilities, the Homestead provides a setting that reflects SCCF’s conservation mission and long-standing island roots.
This move marked a new chapter for THE CAUSE, transforming it into one of Sanibel’s most anticipated annual conservation celebrations.
The Bailey Homestead: A Living Conservation Landmark
The Bailey Homestead Preserve carries deep historical significance for the island. Named after the Bailey family — early conservation advocates on Sanibel — the site symbolizes decades of environmental leadership and community stewardship.
Hosting THE CAUSE at the Homestead connects present-day fundraising efforts with Sanibel’s conservation origins, reinforcing the idea that today’s actions build on generations of environmental responsibility.
Community Leadership Behind The Cause
The Cause is powered by passionate island leaders who bring energy, visibility, and heart to the mission.
For the past several years, Eric Pfeifer, Broker and Owner of Pfeifer Realty Group, has served as co-emcee of THE CAUSE, partnering with Rachael Pierce — widely known on Sanibel and Captiva Islands as a creative force, community connector, talented island artist, and local business owner.
Together, Eric and Rachael have helped:
Energize live fundraising segments
Share SCCF’s mission with authenticity and enthusiasm
Encourage audience participation and donor engagement
Help generate critical donations that directly support conservation programs
Their on-stage partnership has become a recognizable and uplifting part of The Cause experience, blending island personality, humor, passion, and purpose in service of SCCF’s work.
Board Leadership Supporting the Mission
In addition to Eric's support, Mary Ellen Pfeifer, co-founder of Pfeifer Realty Group, has served as a board member of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and will complete her ninth year of service in December 2026.
Her long-term commitment reflects the Pfeifer family’s deep investment in conservation, nonprofit governance, and preserving the environmental character of Sanibel and Captiva Islands for future generations.
What THE CAUSE Supports Today
Funds raised through The Cause directly support SCCF’s conservation initiatives, including:
Wildlife protection and monitoring
Habitat restoration and land management
Water quality research and estuary health studies
Sea turtle and shorebird conservation
Environmental education outreach
Climate resilience and ecosystem preservation
Every contribution helps protect the natural systems that define island life.
A Celebration With Purpose
Beyond fundraising, The Cause has become a joyful island gathering that blends conservation awareness with celebration. The event typically features:
Live music and entertainment
Local food and beverage partners
Educational exhibits and conservation outreach
Opportunities to meet SCCF scientists and educators
Community networking and island fellowship
It’s a place where residents and visitors come together not only to give — but to reconnect with the land and water that make this community special.
Why The Cause Matters to Sanibel & Surrounding Areas
Sanibel’s identity is built on conservation values. Unlike many coastal communities, residents have repeatedly chosen preservation over unchecked development. The Cause reinforces this culture by transforming environmental support into a shared island tradition.
By attending, sponsoring, or donating, participants become active partners in protecting beaches, wetlands, wildlife corridors, and marine ecosystems.
Looking Ahead
From its beginnings on the Sanibel Causeway to its current home at the Bailey Homestead Preserve, THE CAUSE continues to grow in impact and influence. With dedicated board members, passionate emcees, generous sponsors, and community supporters, the event remains a cornerstone of SCCF’s fundraising success.
As Sanibel moves forward, The Cause stands as a reminder that conservation thrives when people come together with purpose — protecting what makes the islands and the Southwest Florida's coastal community extraordinary.
